THE LAKE TRASIMENO
Between Rome and Florence and just at 20 Km from Perugia, surrounded by the green
hills of Umbria and Toscana, there is the natural park of the Trasimeno lake.
With an area of 128 Kmq, it's the fourth lake in Italy.
On the surrounding hills there are beautiful and ancient towns, while from its waters
three islands rise, Minore, Maggiore and Polvese, connected by boat.
Celebrated by writers and painters for his beautiful and mutable shores, where earth,
water and air are in armony, the Trasimeno lake is framed by hills covered with
olives, and populated by numerous species of birds and fishes. The luce and the
"queen" carp cooked "in porchetta" are Trasimeno's specialties.
The Lake is also a relaxing setting to practice all the aquatic sports: there you
can swim, do sailing and windsurf, canoe and water-ski.
MINORE ISLAND
The smallest of the three, today is not accessible.
MAGGIORE ISLAND
This island, with the beautiful fifteenth-century village created by the fishers,
it's the only inhabited, but preserves uncontaminated and natural places. A chapel
remind the visit of S. Francis of Assisi. Famous the artisan manufacture of the
island's lace (called Merletto di Isola or Pizzo d'Irlanda).
POLVESE ISLAND
The biggest one, it's a public park. There many interesting storical memories, like
the S. Secondo Monastery, S. Giuliano church and a castle of the XIV° century.
LEGEND: AGILLA AND TRASIMENO
Lake Trasimeno takes his name by an ancient Etruscan legend that tells about the
tearful story of Prince Trasimeno, god Tirreno's son.
Crossing middle Italy, he stopped off at a lake to rest and there he met the nymph
Agilla, and he fell in love with her so much that he died.
From then on the lake was called Trasimeno, and also today, when the leaves are
rustling in the nocturnal breeze that caresses the water, it is said to be Agilla's
mourning for her Prince Trasimeno.
